Your flight, your rights

Under the EU Regulation (Nr. 261/2004), if your flight is cancelled, you have three options: a refund, a rebooking or, if the airline is at fault, at least £220 in compensation.

Oh, and great news, you have 3 years to claim one.

Legal obligations

Regardless of compensation, if your flight is cancelled, airlines must legally offer you a replacement flight or refund the full price of the ticket at which it was bought.

You have the following options:

Reimbursement of your initial ticket price

Alternative transport by air or rail within a reasonable time frame

Alternative transportation at a later date (depending on availability)

A return flight to your departure point as soon as possible

Dear passenger. We’re sorry to inform you…

If you do opt for compensation on top, your claim will rest on three factors.

One, the airline must be responsible for the cause of the cancellation. Two, your flight must have been scheduled to depart from the EU with any air carrier, or land in the EU with an EU air carrier. And three, and most importantly, when you received notice of the cancellation.

In general, the earlier an airline informs you, the less likely you’ll be due compensation. The table below gives you a clear idea of whether or not flight qualifies:

Airmiles have never been more valuable

If you’ve flown in the EU, or with an EU airline in the past 6 years and meet the regulation criteria, you could land hundreds in compensation.

The full package

The price of your ticket does not affect the level of your compensation. You can be travelling on a package deal, a stag do or a school trip, and you’d receive the same pay out.

As for business travellers, you’ll get the money, not your employer. It wasn’t them stuck in the airport, was it?

...

Bad weather? Bad luck.

One last thing. If your flight was cancelled due to extraordinary circumstances beyond your airlines control, any form of compensation is off the table.

Whether it’s unpredictable weather, air traffic strikes, or even acts of God, lady luck has not been on your side… this time.
